Crystal Cove – Keep Trying Until You Get What You Want

Crystal Cove in Orange County, California is an amazing California State Beach.

I’ve been coming here for years. And for years, I’ve been trying to photograph this particular view. This location means a lot to me… Mainly because I almost drowned here. YIKES!

But the view when coming down PCH from Newport towards Laguna is spectacular. And if you park inside the State Beach Park, you can shoot from one of the vista sites.

The problems, though, are timing and deciding how to shoot it. Is the morning better than around sunset? And what lens should I use?

I’ve come at all times of the day. And I’ve used multiple lenses at different times. I’ve tried the Tamron 17-24, the Sony 35mm, Sony 50mm, and even the Tamron 70-180mm – That’s just too much lens.

Finally… Some success!

I’ve had the 85mm for some time. But I figured it was just a portrait lens, not something I’d consider for landscapes. However, after giving it a try, I like the way the 85mm came out. It was tight from edge to edge. But it worked. And while it’s not spring, the colors were beautiful around 6:00 PM.

The first image is 1/100 sec at F10 with a 100 ISO. It’s definitely my favorite. I also like the second which was shot at .8 sec with F11 and 100 ISO. I like the slow waves on this one.

I don’t know if I’m done shooting this view. But I really am happy with the latest results. I even plan on ordering prints. Message me if you’re interested. And let me know in the comments below which of the two you like the most.
