I Got Soaked Taking This Shot…

Sunrise Shot and a Second Shower

I haven’t been to Corona Del Mar since I last shot it in 2020.

I keep watching YouTube videos of guys getting to locations by sunrise and taking some amazing shots.

“Wow… That is so cool. I could be doing that…”

(Of course though, I have to sit through their coffee making portions of the videos in their intros. Why do they always do that? 🤷🏻‍♂️ )

So last night I’m watching some guy in Scotland doing his thing and I’m like, “Rick, you should really just get up in the morning and go….”

I don’t normally do mornings.
Just a little bit of context there.

So I get up, skip the coffee (you’re welcome) and head out to the beach before the sun is up.

When I get there, the only people around me are the trash guys getting the beach ready for the day. Thanks, guys… You rock and we appreciate it! No one likes dirty bathrooms, right?

So I snap some shots…

I didn’t like the first few. So I get a little bolder and move my new equipment closer to the water. I don’t know if the tide is coming in, if it’s going out, I have no idea what the water is going to do.

But I’m here and I need to try and get something I think I might like.

I get my camera and tripod much closer to the ground, open up my wide angle to 17mm and click.

This is a focus bracketed shot comprised of 13 images. It’s 13 images because I shot at f/2.8. Sun wasn’t out yet, so I needed more light into the lens. But at f/2.8, the focus is shallow. I knew that I wanted those rocks in the background as well as the rocks at my feet in focus. So I shoot a lot of images without moving the camera while focusing in different areas of the scene. I use my phone to click the camera, this prevents the camera from moving when I take a picture. #technology 🙌

“Okay, I’m done here… The water is getting way too close!”

And here comes a wave…

So I quickly pack up my camera, I don’t collapse my tripod because I see the water approaching, I put my backpack on, and make a dash for it.

Uhm… Yeah… I didn’t make it.

So what I’m saying is that while my camera equipment was safe, I drove home completely drenched.

Yay me!
#fail 🤣

Well, I like the image I got. It’s very similar to the one I shot in 2020. I’m okay with that because the point wasn’t to knock out a banger… That’s great if one happens.

The point was to stop putting off something I know I can do while I keep seeing others do it themselves.

The point was to stop enviously watching people from all walks and skill level and to get up and make it happen for myself, regardless of the time of day, the location, or how soaked I might get.

A friend posted the following and I screenshot it because I really liked it:
“How perilous is it to choose not to love this life we’re shown?”

Yeah…
I agree.
